Born in Uji, Kyoto, the heritage cultivar Komakage has been treasured for generations. Phenimax’s Komakage Seiro is a luxuriously crafted gyokuro made exclusively from 100% Komakage leaves.

Cultivated organically in the pristine mountain valleys of Uji, this 100% Komakage gyokuro brims with umami, offering a refined, radiant flavor and a rich, lingering aroma that can be savored until the very last drop.

・Organic
・Native Kyoto Uji Variety

*What is a Native Variety?
A native variety refers to a cultivar that originated in a specific region, grown exclusively in its birthplace or the surrounding area.

・Crafted exclusively from organically cultivated Komakage leaves, this gyokuro embodies the pinnacle of quality.

Born in Uji, Kyoko, the Story of Komakage

Around 1954, in the tea fields of Tawara, Uji City, a remarkable tea tree was discovered among seedlings that had sprouted naturally from native Uji tea seeds.

This naturally occurring tree produced small, thick leaves that yielded tea of exceptional richness, marked by sweetness and depth of umami.  Recognizing its potential, growers carefully nurtured and propagated it.

To this day, Komakage continues to be cultivated with great care in Uji, preserving its legacy and exceptional character.

The name Komakage is rooted in its origin story.

In Japanese tradition, horses have long been regarded as auspicious symbols.  It is said that when an exceptional breed suddenly appeared, like a blessing from the heavens, it was described as “a horse emerging as swiftly as the wind.”  From this metaphor came the name Koma (horse) and Kage (form of presence), signifying the graceful arrival of a noble steed.

Why mention "Altitude"?

Just like wine and coffee, the flavor of green tea is greatly influenced by elevation.
At altitudes below 200 meters, tea plants grow too quickly, often resulting in a flat and less refined taste.

At Phenimax, we carefully select only organic tea leaves grown above 200 meters, where the cool mountain air and day-night temperature variations nurture depth, aroma, and natural sweetness.
Experience the unique character of the land and the complex flavor of truly elevated tea in every sip.
