A Yuzamashi is a traditional Japanese utensil used to cool hot water to the optimal temperature for brewing tea. It is an essential piece of teaware for bringing out the finest flavor in Japanese green tea.
While teapots and cups are universally recognized tools for preparing tea, Japanese tea culture includes an additional, essential item: the Yuzamashi, a vessel specifically designed to cool boiling water to the ideal temperature for brewing.
Why a Yuzamashi Is Essential for Preparing Japanese Tea
Unlike other types of tea, Japanese tea allows you to experience subtle variations in flavor depending on the water temperature.
With premium Japanese teas in particular, lower water temperatures draw out rich umami and sweetness, while higher temperatures bring forward a refreshing astringency. Rather than pouring boiling water directly onto the tea leaves, adjusting the water temperature allows you to discover your preferred flavor profile—and enjoy the unique pleasure of tailoring the taste to suit your mood or the moment.
Distinctive Features of the Phenimax Yuzamashi
The Phenimax Yuzamashi is a finely crafted Arita porcelain vessel, adorned with the traditional Yarai pattern—a design that dates back to the Edo period. Created exclusively for Phenimax Japanese teas, this Yuzamashi embodies both cultural heritage and functional elegance.
The Yarai pattern is delicately carved in a gradient, with varying depths from base to rim. This subtle variation creates a refined tactile experience, making the vessel exceptionally comfortable to hold and naturally fitting in the hand.
Inside the vessel, discreet markers at 30ml, 60ml, and 90ml allow for precise and effortless measurement of water volume. Additionally, Arita porcelain dissipates heat more efficiently than standard pottery, enabling faster cooling of hot water.
Meticulous attention has been given to the spout design. It is angled to prevent dripping along the exterior when pouring, allowing for a smooth, stress-free experience. This subtle yet sophisticated detail showcases the precision and craftsmanship inherent in Japanese design.
