Authentic Morioka Kunzan Nambu Tekki (Ironware)

The Origins of Nambu Tekki

Nambu Tekki, a revered traditional Japanese craft, dates back to the mid-17th century. During the construction of Morioka Castle, the feudal lord of the Nambu domain invited a kama-shi (master craftsman of iron kettles) from Kyoto to create chanoyu gama (tea ceremony kettles) using the region’s abundant natural resources, including iron sand and charcoal. This marked the birth of Nambu Tekki, a craft deeply intertwined with the rich traditions of the region.

Over the centuries, the availability of high-quality raw materials and the unwavering support of the Nambu domain enabled the craft to flourish. Nambu Tekki gained renown for its refined aesthetic, exceptional craftsmanship, and the innovative kinkidome technique—a unique method that prevents rust and enhances the purity of water. These qualities elevated Nambu Tekki to its prestigious status as one of Japan's most celebrated traditional crafts.

Today, skilled artisans continue to preserve these time-honored techniques, meticulously handcrafting exquisite chanoyu gama (tea ceremony kettles) and tetsubin (iron kettles) with precision and dedication. The craft has also embraced contemporary design, broadening its scope to include cookware, flower vases, decorative objects, paperweights, and wind chimes that seamlessly integrate into modern lifestyles.

Nambu Tekki products are cherished worldwide for their unmatched quality, timeless elegance, and practical appeal, offering a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
